Carbon Footprint - Ways to be Green
A carbon footprint is a measure of how everyday activities have an impact on the environment, hence a footprint. They are gaged in terms of how much green house gases are produced and measured in units of carbon dioxide.
Some people aren't aware that there is a carbon footprint and also a secondary footprint.
The secondary footprint is based on our consumer habits. For example, foods bought out of season at the shop or supermarket has to be shipped or flown from abroad. This all adds to the carbon footprint.
One way to make an impact on our secondary footprint is to buy organic and buy local. It's also always best to buy food that's in season. Making sure that the food label confirms where the produce came from. This all makes a difference.
Another 'to do' on the list is to switch off lights in a room when it's empty. Don't leave the TV on stand-by etc. Its common sense really once you get into it. It could save you some money too.
Meanwhile, Government legislation appears to be gearing up towards change.
The United Kingdom hopes to reduce CO2 levels by 2050, by an impressive 60%.
There's still some way to go however, as on average, a household in the United Kingdom emits 6 tonnes of CO2 every year.
